Rushing Water

Our Class working with the stream tables

In Mrs. Kurtz's class, the current science unit is all about landforms. They've used stream tables to make Canyons and a few other landforms such as meanders, curves or loops in a river; beaches, and many others. In the most recent experiment, each table group got to choose an experiment. A few were a mountain range at the end of the Plateau.  One group put little houses on the plateau and watched them be washed away. One of the little houses moved a few inches before ending up 3/4 of the way under the sand.  The regular set up of the stream table  consists of a 20 centimeter plateau, a ruler to hold a bucket with a hole that lets water onto the plateau. There is a bucket on a chair at the end of the table too. They pour a liter of water in the stream table. Then they watch it run down the table. They learned about erosion, when landforms are formed by wind, water and lava and  depositon, materials left behind by water. Sediment is the materials left behind. Each table group of four always has a different turn out of land forms and events that happened with their streams. All these students love this unit and are becoming really smart.
